No. 15 Women's Wrestling Team Produces Five Placers at Waldorf Open

Forest City, Iowa, (Nov. 11, 2023)- The No. 15 Missouri Valley College women's wrestling team opened its season at the Luther Hill Open in Indianola, Iowa, Saturday.  The team competed against programs across multiple collegiate divisions, with five Vikings advancing to the placing rounds.

 

Freshman Serenity De La Garza (McAllen, Texas)-143 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Essence Charles of Iowa Western in a first period pin.

Second Round: Defeated Eve Herlyn of Southeast (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Krista Warren of Grand View (Iowa) in a first period (2:17) pin.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 1 Adaugo Nwachukwu of William Penn (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Ashleigh Denny of William Penn (Iowa) in a first period (0:53) pin.

Third Place Match: Defeated Eve Herlyn of Southeast (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

De La Garza placed third at 143 pounds.

 

No. 8 Junior Hailey Holland (San Bernardino, Calif.)-109 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Renith Montiel of Southeast (Iowa) in a first period (1:26) pin.

Second Round: Defeated Heavynne Robles-Wright of Chadron (Neb.) in a 6-1 decision.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Judy Sandoval of Grand View (Iowa) in a 12-10 decision.

Semifinal: Lost to Tristan Nitta of Grand View (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated No. 16 Alyssa King of Missouri Baptist in a first period (2:14) pin.

Third Place Match: Lost to Judy Sandoval of Grand View (Iowa) in a 14-6 decision.

Holland placed fourth at 109 pounds.

 

No. 12 Sophomore Sage Beltran (Honolulu, Hawaii)-101 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Defeated Ella Whitaker of York (Neb.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 14 Zoe Omura of Midland (Neb.) in a first period pin.

Consolation Fourth Round: Defeated Alanis Serrano-Rios of Waldorf (Iowa) in a 3-2 decision.

Consolation Fifth Round: Defeated Britley Lopez of Chadron (Neb.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to Mia Siqueiros of Iowa Western in a first period pin.

Fifth Place Match: Won by forfeit over No. 14 Zoe Omura of Midland (Neb.).

Beltran placed fifth at 101 pounds.

 

No. 13 Senior Laura Lincoln (Searcy, Ark.)-109 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Joslyn Yarbrough of Southeast (Iowa) in a first period (0:53) pin.

Second Round: Defeated Paw Hobza of Sioux Falls (S.D.) in a first period (0:45) pin.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Emma Wissman of Simpson (Iowa) in a first period (0:47) pin.

Semifinal: Lost to Lita Cruz of Grand View (Iow) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to Judy Sandoval of Grand View (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Fifth Place Match: Defeated No. 16 Alyssa King of Missouri Baptist in a first period (1:16) pin.

Lincoln placed fifth at 109 pounds.

 

Freshman Chase Kiel (Kansas City, Mo.)-130 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Brooklin Kuester of Morningside (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Second Round: Defeated Vada Burton of Simpson (Iowa) in a 12-2 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Lost to Joanna No. 10 Vanderwood of William Penn (Iowa) in a 12-2 technical fall.

Consolation Fourth Round: Defeated Madeline Black of Morningside (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Consolation Fifth Round: Defeated Samara Lusk of Grand View (Iowa) in a first period (1:49) pin.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to Brooklyn Garza of Simpson (Iowa) in a first period pin.

Fifth Place Match: Defeated Josephine Wearmouth of Simpson (Iowa) in an 8-6 decision.

Kiel placed fifth at 130 pounds.

Second Round: Lost to No. 7 Madison Diaz of Grand View (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Brisa Salas of York (Neb.) in a first period (0:17) pin.

Consolation Third Round: Defeated Mariah Wahl of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a first period (0:33) pin.

Consolation Fourth Round: Lost to Ashleigh Denny of William Penn (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

 

Sophomore Jericka Renner (Stockton, Calif.)-155 pounds:

Up next, the Viking women's wrestling team hosts the Missouri Valley Open inside the Burns Athletic Complex.  The tournament begins Friday at 12 p.m., and resumes Saturday at 9 a.m.  This is the largest collegiate women's wrestling event in the country.
