No. 16 Men's Wrestling Finishes Third at Heart Championship

Oskaloosa, Iowa, (Feb. 17, 2023)- The No. 16 Missouri Valley College men's wrestling team competed at the 2024 NAIA Heart of America Athletic Conference at Oskaloosa, Iowa, Friday and Saturday. The Vikings placed third in the standings, and were led by No. 3 Senior Chase Zollmann (Poway, Calif.) who placed second at 149 pounds and No. 6 Junior Joshua Isaac who finished second at 285 pounds. Two other Vikings finished third in their respective weight classes, and a total of 5 individuals earned berths into the 2024 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 3 Senior Chase Zollmann (Poway, Calif.)- 149 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Daryl Easterling of Benedictine (Kan.) in a 15-0 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Reese Finch of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a first period (1:26) pin.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 7 Blake Haney of Grand View (Iowa) in a 8-0 major decision.

1st Place Match: Lost to No. 1 Blake Gonzalez of Grand View (Iowa) in a 6-2 decision.

Zollmann placed second at 149 pounds. He also earned an automatic berth into the 2024 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 5 Senior Joshua Isaac (Woodbridge, Va.)- 285 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Garrett St. Clair of Benedictine (Kan.) in a 5-1 decision.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Connor Bleymeyer of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a first period (1:11) pin.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 21 Garine Gibson of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 12-0 major decision.

1st Place Match: Lost to No. 1 Greg Hagan of Grand View (Iowa) in a first period (2:21) pin.

Isaac placed second at 285 pounds. He also earned an automatic berth into the 2024 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 16 Freshman Haden Hernandez (Huntington Beach, Calif.)- 133 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Angel Cruz of Dickinson State (N.D.) in an 18-2 technical fall. 

Semifinal: Lost to No. 5 Jackson Cockrell of Grand View (Iowa) in a 4-3 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Christian Nishi-Rivera of Baker (Kan.) in a 5-2 decision.

3rd Place Match: Defeated Lane Scorpil of William Penn (Iowa) in a 19-1 technical fall.

Hernandez placed third at 133 pounds. He also earned an automatic berth into the 2024 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 15 Junior Donavan Parn (Brookfield, Mo.)- 141 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Mitchell Huber of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a second period (4:57) pin.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 12 Jackson Wenberg of Graceland (Iowa) in a second period pin.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Kohen Coffman of Benedictine (Kan.) in a second period (4:17) pin.

3rd Place Match: Defeated Ryan Anderson of Graceland (Iowa) in a first period (1:53) pin.

Parn placed third at 141 pounds. He also earned an automatic berth into the 2024 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 12 Sophomore Elijah Hynes (Broken Arrow, Okla.)- 197 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Tyler Casey of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in an 11-2 major decision.

Quarterfinal: Defeated No. 14 Cameron Cornman of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 2-1 tie breaker.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 3 Owen Braungardt of Grand View (Iowa) in a 10-3 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated John Schuttler of Graceland (Iowa) in an 11-0 major decision.

3rd Place Match: Lost to No. 7 Garavous Kouekabakilaho of Grand View (Iowa) in an 8-2 decision.

Hynes placed fourth at 197 pounds. He also earned an automatic berth into the 2024 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 17 Junior Brenden Parks (Elburn, Ill.)- 174 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Sean Stara of Benedictine (Kan.) in a 20-4 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Lost to Tate Nordby of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a third period pin.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Randry Mugisha of Waldorf (Iowa) in a third period (5:22) pin.

Consolation Third Round: Defeated Sincere Hall-Osbourne of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 13-5 major decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to Joseph Teguia of Graceland (Iowa) in a 4-2 decision.

5th Place Match: Defeated Isaac Andersen of Dickson State (N.D.) in a second period (4:19) pin.

Parks placed fifth at 174 pounds.

 

Freshman Kristofer Arrey (Riverside, Calif.)- 141 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Sabri Sino of William Penn (Iowa) in a 6-5 decision.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Guiseppe Guerra of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a 14-11 decision.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 13 Edrich Nortje of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a 17-2 technical fall.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to Ryan Anderson of Graceland (Iowa) in a 7-5 decision.

5th Place Match: Lost to Kohen Coffman of Benedictine (Kan.) in an 8-6 decision.

Arrey placed sixth at 141 pounds.

 

Junior Jesus Gutierrez (Victorville, Calif.)- 165 pounds:

First Round: Lost to Diego Machado of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a 4-2 decision.

Consolation First Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Ryan Van Donselaar of William Penn (Iowa) in a 6-3 decision.

Consolation Third Round: Defeated Vincent Carpena of Benedictine (Kan.) in a 15-14 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to Joey Hancock of Baker (Kan.) in a 16-0 technical fall.

5th Place Match: Lost to No. 14 Roman Garcia of Central Methodist (Mo.) in an 11-3 major decision.

Gutierrez placed sixth at 165 pounds.

 

No. 24 Senior Drake Tipton (Grain Valley, Mo.)- 184 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 14 Jackson King of Dickson State (N.D.) in an 11-1 major decision.

Consolation Second Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Third Round: Defeated Trey Duhon of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 10-1 major decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to No. 9 Brett Bober of Baker (Kan.) in a 17-6 major decision.

5th Place Match: Lost to KJ Fry of Graceland (Iowa) in a 13-12 decision.

Tipton placed sixth at 184 pounds.

 

Junior Bryson Anderson (Milton, Wash.)- 149 pounds:

First Round: Lost to Riley Woods of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a third period pin.

Consolation First Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Second Round: Lost to Reese Finch of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a 13-8 decision.

 

Sophomore Cole Patten (Lebanon, Mo.)- 157 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Jackson Prescott of Waldorf (Iowa) in a 6-3 decision.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 6 Dylan Whitt of Grand View (Iowa) in a second period pin.

Consolation Second Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Third Round: Lost to No. 23 Kael Bunce of William Penn (Iowa) in a 22-7 technical fall.

 

Freshman Jayden Joseph (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)- 285 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 21 Garine Gibson of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 15-9 decision.

Consolation Second Round: Lost to Chase Nutting of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a first period pin.

 

Zollman was named the Heart Newcomer of the Year.

 

As a team, No. 16 Missouri Valley finished third with 110.0 total points. No. 1 Grand View (Iowa) won the tournament with 212.0, and Graceland (Iowa) was second with 148.5 points. The NAIA will announce the wild-card recipients on Tuesday.

Up next for the Vikings men's wrestling team is the 2024 NAIA National Championship, set for Feb. 29-Mar. 2, in Wichita, Kan.
