Men's Basketball Suffers Home Loss to Grand View

Marshall, Mo., (Jan. 22, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's basketball teams hosted Grand View (Iowa) in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader Monday evening inside the Burns Athletic Complex.  The women's team fell to No. 18 Grand View, 83-69. The men's team fell, 85-64.

 

 

The men's game started with Grand View jumping out to a quick 4-0 advantage.  Senior Keenan Jones (Chicago, Ill.) and Junior Jarrius Burnett (Covington, Ga.) each sank three-point shots to put Missouri Valley ahead, 6-4 with three minutes played.  Burnett added another three-pointer, and Junior Geovonni Floyd (Bowling Green, Ky.) put in a dunk off an offensive miss to keep MVC on top, 11-9.  Grand View responded with a 9-2 run to back in front, 20-13 midway through the half.  Burnett ended the drought with a layup, and Junior J'Luan Patterson (Belleville, Ill.) made a three-pointer to cut the gap to 20-18.  The deficit grew over the next several minutes, and GVU built up a double-digit lead, 29-18 with less than eight minutes remaining in the half.  Grand View extended its lead through the three-minute mark, out to 38-22.  Jones responded with a layup, and Junior Logan Walker (Lebam, Wash.) scored five-straight points to work back to a single-digit deficit, 38-29.  The final stretch featured Grand View adding to its lead, as MVC went into halftime trailing, 41-29.

 

A pair of Burnett field goals started play in the second half, to make it a single-digit gap at 41-33 with one minute off the clock.  Grand View responded with a quick 9-0 run to push its advantage out to 50-33 just over two minutes later.  Missouri Valley trailed by a 52-35 score, but Junior Cahwan Smith (Collinsville, Ill.) started a run with a layup.  Walker and Junior Jace Lance (Marshall, Mo.) each added one field goal, while Burnett sank one free throw to help the team string together nine-straight points to tail, 52-44, at the eight-minute mark.  Patterson scored the next 11 points for MVC, and made it a 61-55 game four minutes later.  Grand View responded with another run, this time outscoring Missouri Valley by a 14-0 margin to stretch its lead out to 76-55 with four minutes remaining.  Missouri Valley was unable to work back late in the contest, and fell, 85-64.

 

Patterson led with 21 points to go with four rebounds.  Burnett totaled 17 points and six rebounds.  Missouri Valley forced Grand View into 10 turnovers and came down with 12 offensive rebounds.

 

Missouri Valley falls to 8-11 on the season and 7-8 in the Heart.  Grand View improves to 8-10 overall and 6-9 in the conference.

 

Up next, the Viking men's and women's basketball teams will host Mount Mercy (Iowa) in a Heart doubleheader, Wednesday, beginning with the women's game at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.  Missouri Valley swept the doubleheader between the two teams earlier this season in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, back on Nov. 29.  The women's team won, 79-70, and the men's team earned a 71-68 victory.
