Powerlifting Teams Compete at USA Collegiate Invite

Liberty, Mo., (November 12, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College powerlifting teams competed at the USA Collegiate Invite in Liberty, Mo., Sunday.  State records were broken with two individual weight class winners.

 

Senior Savanah Ewing (Linden, Calif.) (52kg) placed third, and qualified for nationals with a 220kg/484lb total. Her best lifts were 80 kg/176lbs on Squat, a 42.5kg/93.5lb  bench, and a 97.5kg/ 214.5lb deadlift. Ewing also had a perfect 9/9 day.

 

Senior Lauren Bates (Kearney, Mo.) (100+kg) placed first in her division with a 467.5kg/1030lb total. Bates had a 172.5 kg/379.5lb squat, 97.5 kg/214.5lb bench, and 197.5kg/434.5lb on deadlift. She tied a state record on bench, and held the state record in deadlift for a minute before her teammate, Macie set the new record immediately following her attempt.

 

Senior Macie Ables (Olathe, Kan.) (100+kg) placed second in her division with a 465 kg/1,023lb total. Ables had a 177.5kg/390.5lb squat, a 90 kg/198lb bench, and a 197.5 kg/434.5lb deadlift. Ables obtained the deadlift state record for Missouri.

 

Senior Dawson Woehr (75 kg) had a 157.5kg/346.5lb squat, a 100 kg/220lb bench, and a 212.5 kg/467.5lb deadlift. Woehr had a total of 470 kg/1,034lb.

 

Sophomore Javier Medrano (82.5 kg) had a 165 kg/363lb squat, a 90 kg/198lb bench, and a 192.5 kg/423.5 deadlift. Medrano had a total of 447.5kg/984.5lb

 

Junior Aleix Costa Gurrerro (Barcelona, Spain) (82.5 kg) had a 130 kg/286lb squat, a 97.5 kg/214.5lb bench, and a 185 kg/407lb deadlift. His total was 412.5kg/907.5lb.

 

Junior Alvaro Atienza (Madrid, Spain) (100kg) placed first in the 100kg division. He had a 130kg/286lb  squat, an 80 kg/176lb bench, and a 177.5 kg/390.5 deadlift. His total was 387.5kg/851.4lb. 

 

The Missouri Valley powerlifting programs currently have seven individuals that are National qualifiers.  Those include Junior Audrey Schoch (San Antonio, Texas), Bates, Ables, Ewing, Sophomore Gabe Pineda (Marshall, Mo.), Senior Reyven McDonald (Bonner Springs, Mo.), Freshman Corey Morabito (Lansdale, Pa.), and Freshman Azlyn Schwarzer (Burleson, Texas).

 

The powerlifting teams will next be in competition after winter break, with the season resuming in January.
