No. 15 Women's Wrestling Hosts Missouri Valley Open

Marshall, Mo., (Nov. 18, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College women's wrestling team hosted the annual Missouri Valley Open, Friday and Saturday inside the Burns Athletic Complex, featuring teams across all divisions of collegiate women's wrestling, including NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO. The Missouri Valley Open is the largest women's collegiate wrestling tournament in the country, and includes more than 50 teams and more than 450 women's wrestlers. 

 

Freshman Serenity De La Garza (McAllen, Texas)- 143 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Sylvia Pierce of McKendree (III.) in a first period (2:02) pin.

Second Round: Defeated No. 14 Naida Abdijanovic of William Penn (Iowa) in a first period (0:55) pin.

Third Round: Defeated Anna Stephens of Westminster (Mo.) in a first period (0:32) pin.

Quarterfinal: Lost to Ella Schmit of Iowa in an 11-0 technical fall.

Consolation Sixth Round: Defeated teammate Maria Slaughter in an 8-2 decision.

Consolation Seventh Round: Lost to Reagen Gallaway of Hastings (Neb.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Seventh Place Match: Defeated Khadijah Sanusi of Sacred Heart (Conn.) in a first period (1:08) pin.

De La Garza placed seventh at 143 pounds.

 

Freshman Maria Slaughter (Wentzville, Mo.)- 143 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Lost to No. 3 Bella Amaro of Southern Oregon in an 8-1 decision.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Erma Williams of Avila (Mo.) in a first period (0:33) pin.

Consolation Third Round: Defeated Unattached Micah Fisher in a first period (0:51) pin.

Consolation Fourth Round: Defeated Cara Cheng of Missouri Baptist in a 10-0 technical fall.
