Shooting Sports Takes First at State Fair

Sedalia, Mo., (Sept. 14, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College shooting sports team opened its 2023-24 competition season at the State Fair (Mo.) Community College Trap Exhibition.  The Vikings finished first overall competing at the Sedalia Rod and Gun Club in American Trap.

 

Leading the team was Freshman Dakota Zaugg (Santa Maria, Calif.), who tied for the highest score with a 97/100.  Zaugg went to thirteen targets, but lost in a shoot-off for first place overall.  Sophomore Jarret Fuehring (Sweet Springs, Mo.) placed third with a 96/100 score.  Freshman Jack Duffin (Novato, Calif.) was fifth with a 95/100, followed by Sophomore Andrew Stone (Cowgill, Mo.) in sixth with a 94/100.  Junior Charlie Maddox (Forest, Va.) placed eighth with a 93/100 score.  These five contributed to the team score which totaled 475.

 

Also competing for the team included Sophomore Lane Zabokrtsky (Fairbury, Neb.) with a 92/100, Sophomore Hunter Sanders (Brookfield, Mo.) with a 90/100, Junior Blayne Kolb (Maysville, Mo.) with an 89/100, Senior Evyn Perkins (Sedalia, Mo.) with an 88/100, Senior Alex Machetta (Raymore, Mo.) with an 88/100, Sophomore Ely Allen (Carrollton, Mo.) with a 78/100, Sophomore Hunter Sims (Sweet Springs, Mo.) with a 76/100 and Freshman Dylan Kempker (Eldon, Mo.) with a 73/100.

 

Sophomore Josie Stuver (Carrollton, Mo.) finished with the third-best score for women's shooters with an 87/100.  Freshman Paige Burns (Trail, Minn.) followed with an 85/100, and Junior Boe Caplan (Buellton, Calif.) had a 78/100.

 

The 475 overall team score for Missouri Valley put the Vikings first in the standings.  State Fair (Mo.) followed with a 464, and William Woods (Mo.) had a 414 score.

 

"It was a great introduction for the freshman's first collegiate event," said Head Coach Reba Kingsley.  "This was a good warm-up competition to dial in on trap and the mental game.  We identified things to work on at practice to prepare for the next competition.  The team is off to a good start and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season".

 

Up next, the Viking shooting sports team will compete at the Drury (Mo.) Shootout in Springfield, Mo., Saturday and Sunday.
