Rodeo Teams Compete at UTM Rodeo
Martin, Tenn., (April 14, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's rodeo teams traveled to Martin, Tenn., to compete at the Tennessee-Martin rodeo over the weekend. The men's team finished first overall with two events winners.
In bareback riding, the Viking cowboys claimed four of the top five spots in the average. Senior Colt Eck (Redfield, Kan.) finished first overall with a 168 in the average. Eck won the first go-round with an 89, and followed with a 79 to finish third in the second go-round. He collected 160 points. Senior Ty Pope (Waverly, Kan.) and Sophomore Kooper Heimburg (San Tan Valley, Ariz.) tied for second in the average with a 163 each. Pope was third in the first go-round with a 79, then won the second go-round with an 84. He earned 145 points. Heimburg finished second in both go-rounds with rides of 81 and 82. He also collected 145 points. Sophomore Dawson Honeycutt (Alamosa, Colo.) was fifth in the standings with a 131 in the average. He earned 50 points.
In saddle bronc riding, Pope was first in the average with a 162. He won both go-rounds with rides of 82 and 80, collecting a total of 180 points. Senior Tyler Freeman (Cadiz, Ky.) placed second in the average with a 143. He was third in the first go-round with a 70, and runner-up in the second go-round with a 73. He earned 130 points. Senior Nate Pelke (Mondovi, Wis.) placed second in the steer wrestling average, with a 15.2, one second behind the leader. Pelke was third in the first go-round with a 6.4, and earned runner-up status in the second go-round with an 8.8. He earned 140 points. Also, the pair of Pelke and Eck placed sixth in the team roping event, with a 23.4 in the average. They collected 30 points each.
The women's team produced only one point scorer on the weekend. Freshman Kalyani Das (Las Cruses, N.M.) was second in the first go-round of barrel racing, with a 13.89. She finished with a 37.66 in the average and earned 50 points.
In the team standings, Missouri Valley was first overall on the men's side, with 840 points. Second place was West Alabama with 395 points.
Up next, the Viking rodeo teams will compete at the Arkansas-Monticello rodeo, April 18-20 in Monticello, Ark.
