Baseball Falls to Park on the Road

Parkville, Kan., (April 28, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College baseball team opened a series against Park (Mo.) with a doubleheader in Parkville, Mo. The Vikings fell in both games, by scores of 2-0 and 4-0.

The opening game started with both teams leaving one runner stranded in the first inning. Park went in front in the second inning, producing two hits and producing two runs. In the top of the third inning, Freshman Catcher Masayoshi Hattori (Tokyo, Japan) and Junior Shortstop Josias Mogollon (Barquismeto, Venezuela) had a single each but the Vikings were unable to produce any runs. The Pirates could not increase its advantage with Junior Pitcher Dieterich Guertzgen (De Soto, Mo.) striking out the batter and leaving the runner in third base stranded. The two teams were kept scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning. Missouri Valley threatened in the top of the sixth as Junior Centerfielder Ivory Daniels (Little Rock, Ark.) and Senior Third Baseman Jumpei Ohashi (Asahikawa, Japan) both singled, but they were left stranded. The Vikings were unable to produce from the plate late in the game, and fell, 2-0. 

Ohashi had two hits, while Danield, Mogollon, and Hattori each had one hit. Guertzgen picked up the loss with five hits, two earned runs, and four strikeouts.  

 

Game two started with Park going in front early as they scored on a fielder's choice. Both teams failed to produce from the plate in the second inning. Hattori reached first base with a single, but was left stranded. The Pirates put a pair of runners on-base, and eventually scored two runs with a double to stay ahead in the third inning. After a scoreless fourth inning, Park featured a solo homer to make it 4-0. Missouri Valley threatened in the top of the sixth, using a double by Mogollon, and a single from Ohashi, but the Pirates got out of the jam with a grounder to shortstop. The Vikings were unable to cut into their deficit, and fell by a final score of 4-0.

Mogollon had two hits. Ohashi, Simpliciano, Hattori and Weber finished with one hit each.

 

The pair of losses drop Missouri Valley to 14-30 overall, and 10-20 in the Heart. Park improves to 16-28 on the season and 10-20 in the conference.

Up next, the Vikings and Pirates finish their series with a Saturday doubleheader at Parkville, Mo., beginning at 1 p.m.
