No. 8 Women's Wrestling Produces Five Finalists at Simpson/Luther Hill Open

Indianola, Iowa, (Nov. 2, 2024)- The No. 8 Missouri Valley College women's wrestling opened its 2024-25 season at the Simpson/Luther Hill Open in Indianola, Iowa, Saturday.  The Vikings competed against programs across multiple collegiate divisions.  Five wrestlers advanced to the championship match in their respective weight classes, with two individual champions.

Varsity Division:

No. 3 Sophomore Serenity De La Garza (McAllen, Texas)-138lbs:

First Round: Defeated Madeline Barton of Quincy (Ill.) in a 21-11 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Ellisa Jimenez of William Jewell (Mo.) in an 11-0 technical fall.

Semifinal: Defeated Laura Kipnusu of Grand View (Iowa) in a 14-4 technical fall.

Championship Match: Defeated Marissa Sanabria of Lindenwood (Mo.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

No. 1 Senior Kelani Corbett (Wahiawa, Hawaii)-207lbs:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Ozoima Ogu of Northern Michigan in a 13-0 technical fall.

Semifinal: Defeated Katja Osteen of Iowa in a 4-3 decision.

Championship Match: Defeated Jaycee Foeller of Iowa in a 6-3 decision.

Freshman Isla Baeza (Orem, Utah)-124lbs:

First Round: Defeated Allison Meyer of Lindenwood (Mo.) in a second period (5:32) pin.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Carysa Corrado of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a second period (5:48) pin.
