Women's Soccer Secures Shutout Win Over Kansas Wesleyan

Marshall, Mo., (August 31, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College women's soccer team hosted Kansas Wesleyan in a non-conference game Saturday evening inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.  The Vikings scored two goals in the first half, and added a late goal to finish out a 3-0 win.

Missouri Valley took control of the possession at the start of the contest, and eventually worked its first quality chance with nearly eight minutes played.  Junior Midfielder Judit Ferre (Barcelona, Spain) and Senior Defender Wing Shan Wong (Hong Kong) worked together near the Kansas Wesleyan goal to send a cross into the box.  Junior Midfielder Carla Carmona (Barcelona, Spain) received the cross just in front of the goal, and put her shot from three-yards out past the keeper to give MVC a 1-0 lead.  Senior Forward Ashley Arribas (Lake Forest, Calif.) nearly doubled the advantage four minutes later, but her shot was saved.  With nearly 20 minutes off the clock, Arribas found another opportunity, this time off a cross from Junior Forward Viktoria Einsbor (Havdrup, Denmark).  Arribas put a close-range header just inside the post, and made it a 2-0 score.  The two teams traded possession over the next several minutes.  Kansas Wesleyan was unable to work a chance on goal through the entire half, while Junior Forward Marlene Flores (Bolivia) tested the KWU keeper with less than three minutes on the clock.  Flores' shot was saved, and the Vikings went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Play in the second half started with Kansas Wesleyan taking control of possession.  The Coyotes had their first shot on goal with two minutes played, and Sophomore Goalkeeper Marina Barbara Bujalance (Cornella Llobregat, Spain) came up with her first save.  In all, Kansas Wesleyan created two corner kick opportunities, and forced Barbara Bujalance into another save, within the opening six minutes of the second half.  The Vikings countered, and held the better of possession over the next stretch.  Arribas had a shot saved near the 57-minute mark, while Junior Midfielder Serena Abe (Mesquite, Texas) tested the KWU keeper six minutes later.  Shan Wong also landed a shot on goal, which was saved, with less than 15 minutes to play in the game.  Missouri Valley eventually put the game out of reach, as Carmona sent a long pass to Ferre, who got behind the Kansas Wesleyan defenders.  Ferre had a breakaway on goal, dribbled around the keeper and put her shot into an open net to make it 3-0 with less than nine minute remaining.  Barbara Bujalance needed to make one more save in the closing minutes to finish out the shutout victory, 3-0.

Both Ferre and Carmona finished with one goal and one assist apiece, while Carmona also registered the game-winning goal.  Arribas added one goal, and both Shan Wong and Einsbor totaled one assist each.  Barbara Bujalance made three saves in the shutout.  Missouri Valley held an 11-9 edge in total shots.

Missouri Valley improves to 2-2 on the season, while Kansas Wesleyan drops to 0-2.

Up next, the Viking women's soccer team will travel to Siloam Springs, Ark., for a pair of games next week.  The first game is against No. 12 John Brown (Ark.), Thursday at 7 p.m., followed by a game against No. 21 Oklahoma Wesleyan, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m.
