No. 13 Women's Soccer Opens Season at No. 5 William Carey

Hattiesburg, Miss., (Aug. 19, 2023)- The No. 13 Missouri Valley College  women's soccer team opened its 2023 season with a road game in Hattiesburg, Miss., against No. 5 William Carey (Miss.).  The Vikings kept close early, but dropped their season-opening contest.

 

William Carey got out to an early lead in the first minutes of the contest, going on top 1-0 with a goal less than four minutes into the game.  Missouri Valley answered back minutes later, tying the teams at 1-1 on a goal from Sophomore Forward Ashley Arribas (Lake Forest, Calif.), off an assist from Junior Forward Miriam Aldabo Alguero (Mequinenza, Spain).  Freshman Goalkeeper Marina Barbara Bujalance (Cornella Llobregat, Spain) came up with her first save near the 20-minute mark.  William Carey went back in front 10-minutes later, making it a 2-1 score.  Barbara Bujalance came up with her second save with 31-minutes played in the half.  One more goal from William Carey came with six minutes remaining in the half, and MVC went into halftime trailing, 3-1.  Missouri Valley was unable to cut into the William Carey advantage in the second half, as the contest ended with a 6-1 score line.

 

Arribas scored the lone goal for the Vikings, off an assist from Aldabo Alguero.  Barbara Bujalance finished with six saves.The Vikings totaled eight shots in the game.

 

The loss drops Missouri Valley to 0-1 on the season, while William Carey improves to 1-0. 

 

Up next, the Vikings host Jamestown (N.D.) in a non-conference contest, Wednesday at 7 p.m, inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.
