Men's Wrestling Finishes Fifth at Home Invitational

Marshall, Mo. (January 25, 2025)- The No. 15 Missouri Valley College men's wrestling team finished the Missouri Valley Invitational Saturday inside the Burns Athletic Complex.  The event featured 50 NAIA programs, including 21 ranked teams and more than 500 wrestlers.  The Vikings produced one finalist, two placers and finished fifth in the team standings.

 

No. 7 Junior Francis Morrissey (Warner Robins, Ga.)-174 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Esteban Sedano of Hastings (Neb.) in a first period (0:20) pin.

Second Round: Defeated Alex Drewek of Siena Heights (Mich.) in a first period (1:12) pin.

Third Round: Defeated No. 22 Jordan Lomeli of Oklahoma City in an 18-3 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Jeivan Ross of St. Thomas (Fla.) in a 17-5 major decision.

Semifinal: Defeated Sherman Dixon of Cumberlands (Ky.) in an 18-2 technical fall.

Championship Match: Lost to Kris Ketchum of St. Thomas (Fla.) in a 7-0 decision.

Morrissey led the team with a second place finish at 174 pounds, going 5-1 in the tournament.

 

Sophomore Kristofer Arrey (Riverside, Calif.)-149 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Dregan Murray of Oklahoma Wesleyan in a first period (2:34) pin.

Second Round: Defeated Caleb Nielsen of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a 4-3 decision.

Third Round: Lost to Elijah Larsen of Grand View (Iowa) in a third period (5:59) pin.

Consolation Fourth Round: Defeated Noah Avila of Waldorf (Iowa) in a 15-0 technical fall.

Consolation Fifth Round: Defeated Carlos Santos of Indiana Tech in an 11-2 major decision.

Consolation Sixth Round: Defeated No. 21 Tyler Okada of Waldorf (Iowa) in a second period (3:58) pin.

Consolation Seventh Round: Defeated No. 22 CJ Shadinger of Reinhardt (Ga.) in a 2-0 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Won by medical forfeit over Hagen Heistand of Concordia (Neb.)

Third Place Match: Lost to Jalen Vladic of Providence (Mont.) in a 12-2 major decision.

Arrey placed fourth at 149 pounds and finished 7-2 in the tournament.

 

No. 24 Sophomore Robert Albert (Cape Coral, Fla.)-125 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Defeated Jaxson Irvine of Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in a first period (1:45) pin.

Third Round: Lost to No. 21 Hunter Bennett of Doane (Neb.) in a 17-4 major decision.

Consolation Fourth Round: Lost to Garrett Johnson of Oklahoma City in a third period (6:26) pin.

 

Senior Bryson Anderson (Orting, Wash.)-149 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Joe Frazier of Graceland (Iowa) in a 16-1 technical fall.

Second Round: Defeated Joshua Zeman of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a first period (2:54) pin.

Third Round: Lost to No. 8 Alex Pena of Wayland Baptist (Texas) in a 19-4 technical fall.

Consolation Fourth Round: Lost to Jose Milord of Campbellsville (Ky.) in a 10-1 major decision.

 

Junior Makoa Goeas (Kahalu'u, Hawaii)-157 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Bryson McCraw of Montreat (N.C.) in a 7-2 decision.

Second Round:  Defeated Dylan Milster of Texas Wesleyan in a third period (5:27) pin.

Third Round: Lost to No. 7 Elliott Rodgers of Marian (Ind.) in a 15-0 technical fall.

Consolation Fourth Round: Defeated Jakob Stovall of Baker (Kan.) in a 15-5 major decision.

Consolation Fifth Round: Lost to Malachia Harris of Cumberlands (Ky.) in an 18-3 technical fall.

 

Freshman Brayden Shelton (Centralia, Mo.)-157 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Invi Bella of Graceland (Iowa) in a second period (4:22) pin.

Second Round: Defeated Westyn Moyer of Rio Grande (Ohio) in a 13-4 major decision.

Third Round: Lost to No. 16 Anthony Federico of Southeastern (Fla.) in a 19-5 major decision.

Consolation Fourth Round: Defeated Jackson Remmers of Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in a first period (2:24) pin.

Consolation Fifth Round: Defeated Trent Evans of William Penn (Iowa) in a first period (1:00) pin.

Consolation Sixth Round: Lost to No. 24 Thade Radosa of Cornerstone in a 7-4 decision.

 

Senior Brenden Parks (Crystal Lake, Ill.)-165 pounds:

Second Round: Defeated Noah Sample of Baker (Kan.) in a first period (2:35) pin.

Third Round: Lost to Eli Clemmons of Cumberland (Tenn.) in a 10-2 major decision.

Consolation Fourth Round: Defeated Blaine Christo of Morningside (Iowa) in a first period (2:33) pin.

Consolation Fifth Round: Defeated Mitchell Freeman of Rio Grande (Ohio) in an 8-1 decision.

Second Round: Defeated No. 15 Joel Campbell of Missouri Baptist in a second period (4:44) pin.

Third Round: Lost to Justin McCunn of Grand View (Iowa) in a 17-0 technical fall.

Consolation Fourth Round: Won by forfeit over Tyson Barnhart of Southeastern (Fla.)

Consolation Fifth Round: Defeated Cohen Bunting of Campbellsville (Ky.) in a first period (3:00) pin.

Consolation Sixth Round: Lost to Jeivan Ross of St. Thomas (Fla.) in a first period (0:49) pin.

 

Senior Drake Tipton (Grain Valley, Mo.)-184 pounds:

Junior Emmanuel Ayi-Bonte (Woodbridge, Va.)-197 pounds:

First Round: Lost to Omari Smith of Oklahoma City in a 13-5 major decision.

Consolation First Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Second Round: Lost to No. 14 Clay Guenin of Marian (Ind.) in a third period (6:28) pin.

 

No. 18 Junior Randy Gonzalez (Lakewood, Colo.)-285 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Cole Hennings of Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in an 8-1 decision.

Second Round: Defeated Devin Lolar of St. Mary (Kan.) in a 3-1 sudden-victory decision.

Third Round: Defeated Chance Robinson of Jamestown (N.D.) in a third period (6:26) pin.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 14 Shane Mattson of Montana-Northern in a 5-2 decision.

Consolation Sixth Round: Lost to Koen Mattern of Hastings (Neb.) in an 11-4 decision.

 

Sophomore Jayden Joseph (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)-285 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Cordell Roberts Breusch of Central Christian (Kan.) in a first period (1:36) pin.

Second Round: Lost to Bruce Wagers of Rio Grande (Ohio) in a first period (0:30) pin.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Eathan Westfall of Cleary (Mich.) in a first period (2:48) pin.

Consolation Third Round: Defeated Cole Hennings of Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in a 9-5 decision.

Consolation Fourth Round: Lost to Koen Mattern of Hastings (Neb.) in a 4-0 decision.

 

Missouri Valley finished fifth in the team standings with 106 points.  No. 1 Grand View (Iowa) won the tournament with a total of 248 points, followed by No. 14 Montana State-Northern in second place with 142.5 points.  No. 6 Doane (Neb.) was third with 121.5 points and No. 12 St. Mary (Kan.) was fourth with 118 points.

 

Up next for the men's wrestling team is a dual against No. 1 Grand View (Iowa), in Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday at 7 p.m.
