No. 7 Men's Soccer Plays Grand View to Tie at Home

Marshall, Mo., (Oct. 12, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College soccer teams hosted Grand View (Iowa) in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.  The No. 20 women's team overcame an early deficit to earn a 3-1 win.  The No. 7 men's team played Grand View to a 1-1 tie.

The men's game started with an early chance created by Grand View, with less than one minute played, as Junior Goalkeeper Cristobal Benitez Delgado (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) made the save.  The first quality chance for Missouri Valley came just past the 18-minute mark, on a shot from Senior Midfielder Yoshiki Igarashi (Tokyo, Japan) that was saved by the GVU keeper.  The two teams traded possession over the next several minutes.  Senior Defender Jacob Adams (Nottingham, England) had to save a shot from Grand View going towards goal with 13-minutes remaining in the half.  Missouri Valley could not create another chance on goal in the closing minutes of the half, and the teams went into the break scoreless.

The second half began with chances for Missouri Valley.  Junior Defender Jack Hurrell (Long Melford, England) had a header saved with just over one minute played, and the team created three corner kicks in the opening ten minutes.  Senior Forward Sam Green (London, England) put a shot on goal near the 57-minute, but the attempt was saved.  Green came back five minutes later, and had another shot saved.  Grand View nearly went in front, as a shot hit off the crossbar midway through the half.  Missouri Valley took advantage of GVU failing to make a clearance.  Green put a shot towards the Grand View goal, and a defender headed the attempt off the post and into the net to put MVC in front, 1-0, with 25-minutes to play in the game.  Grand View forced Benitez Delgado into a save ten minutes later.  Missouri Valley was unable to increase its advantage, and GVU had one late chance to equalize.  A shot from just outside the MVC box for Grand View went into the goal, and tied the teams with just over four minutes to play.  Neither team could break the tie in the closing moments, and the game ended with a 1-1 score.

Benitez Delgado made two saves in goal.  Missouri Valley held a 17-7 advantage in shots and a 10-5 edge in corner kicks.

Missouri Valley moves to 9-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the Heart.  Grand View sits at 3-6-5 on the season and 0-4-3 in the conference.

Up next, the men's team hosts Bellevue (Neb.) in a non-conference game, Wednesday at 7 p.m., inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.  Both teams will be in action Oct. 19, hosting Park (Mo.) in a Heart doubleheader.  Women's game at 1 p.m., and the men's game to follow at 3:30 p.m.
