
Men's Lacrosse Falls on the Road to Midland
Fremont, Neb., (March 29, 2025)- The Missouri Valley College lacrosse teams traveled to Fremont, Neb., for a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader against Midland (Neb), Saturday afternoon. The men's team fell, 11-4.
The men's game opened with Midland going in front early, scoring the first goal of the contest with less than two minutes played. The two teams traded possession over the next stretch of play, as Senior Goalkeeper Jake Lipscomb (Boiling Springs, S.C.) came up with two saves over the next ten minutes. Eventually, Midland added to its lead, scoring near the three-minute mark to sit with a 2-0 advantage. Lipscomb made two more saves late in the quarter, but the Warriors found a last-second goal to finish the quarter in front, 3-0.
The second quarter began with possession for both teams. Sophomore Midfielder George Dieck (Mt. Airy, Md.) had a shot on goal with one minute off the clock, which was saved. Turnovers were caused by both teams through the stretch, until six minutes had been played in the quarter when Midland scored to hold a 4-0 lead. Missouri Valley eventually trailed by a 5-0 deficit until a goal with just under five minutes to play in the half. Senior Defender Alvaro Atienza (Madrid, Spain) set up Freshman Midfielder Andrew Gongora (Corona, Calif.) with a shot, and the gap shrunk to 5-1. Midland responded moments after the ensuing draw, and added one more goal in the quarter. Lipscomb came up with two more saves in the final moments, and MVC went into halftime trailing, 6-1.
Play after the break began with a quick save by Lipscomb, which led to a quality opportunity for the Vikings. Senior Defender Aleix Costa Guerrero (Barcelona, Spain) assisted on a Senior Attack Carson Willey (Carstairs, Alberta) goal, and Missouri Valley trailed, 6-2, with just over one minute off the clock. The next several minutes featured possession by both teams, as Lipscomb made another pair of saves. Midland eventually worked a goal midway through the quarter, but the ensuing draw was collected by MVC, and Costa Guerrero scored to put the Vikings in a 7-3 deficit. Midland had the better of possession through the rest of the quarter, and added two more goals to hold a 9-3 advantage.
Missouri Valley added one more goal in the game, coming less than three minutes into play of the fourth quarter, on a Gongora shot. Lipscomb made six more saves throughout the quarter, but Midland eventually topped the Vikings, 11-4.
Gongora had two goals, while Costa Guerrero added one goal and one assist. Willey scored one goal. Lipscomb made 19 saves in goal. Missouri Valley totaled 30 ground balls, and caused 23 turnovers in the game.
Missouri Valley drops to 0-4 on the season and 0-4 in the conference. Midland improves to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the Heart.
Up next the women's team will travel to Chicago, Ill., to place NCAA Division III Elmhurst (Ill.), Wednesday at 6 p.m. The men's team will play on the road, Tuesday, at No. 10 William Penn (Iowa) in a 6 p.m., Heart contest.
