Lawrence “Larry” Fields came to Missouri Valley College in 1946. At MVC, Larry played football for three years, and was a member of the M.C.A.U. conference champion team. In addition to football, Larry was a four-year member of the track and field team and was M.C.A.U. conference champion multiple times. He won 22 medals—11 of them gold—and was the highest scoring Viking track and field athlete two of his four years. At MVC, Larry was involved in Alpha Phi Omega, the Dramatic Art Club, Alpha Psi Omega, and the Varsity Letterman’s Club (V-Club).

After graduating from MVC in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in speech and English education, Larry served for the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II. Later, he pursued a 30-year career as an educator and coach.

Larry was Scout Master of Troop 309; he is a member of the Tribe-of-Mic-O-Say; he served as president of the Excelsior Springs PTA and Kwanis Club; and he was exhalter ruler of the Elk’s Lodge 1001.

Larry says that Pop Ferguson is the person that influenced him most at MVC. “He told me that you can always do better than you think you can,” Larry said.
