He set the 120-yard hurdle record in 1971, the 100 yard dash record in 1972 and was a member of the record-breaking 440 yard relay team in 1971. Dennis had a special 1972 season, securing nine first place finishes at two events. Outside of track and field, Dennis was active with the campus radio station, band, student senate, College Center Council and Beta Beta Beta.

After graduating Cum Laude from Missouri Valley with a degree in biology in 1972, Dennis obtained a Masters of Education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1981. During his professional career, Dennis was the Science Department Chairman at Visitation Academy (Mo.) from 1977-1987 and then became the Science Department Chairman at Eureka (Mo.) Dennis credits Dr. Paul Fredstrom and Dr. Winfield Bearce as two people who greatly influenced him while at Missouri Valley. Dennis says Dr. Fredstrom helped him find his way in the education field and Dr. Bearce showed him what science was all about.
