Bio
Ramone Powell has made an impact on the men’s basketball program at Missouri Valley for more than 20 years. He was the first recruit to join the program under then-first year Head Coach Chad Lance, and quickly made his presence felt. Ramone’s very first game was a record-setting performance, helping the team set the program’s single-game record with 111 points scored in a win over Harris-Stowe. Powell became one of the program’s most decorated players, earning first team all-conference honors and was the Heart Player of the Year runner-up, in addition to a third team NAIA All-America selection in 2005 to cap his senior season. Powell ranks in the top ten in several single-season statistical categories for the program. He is third all-time with 232 field goals made, fourth with 608 total points, and seventh with 69 steals, all from the 2004-05 season.
Following his time as a student-athlete, Powell began his coaching tenure with the program, first as a student assistant coach, then serving two years as a graduate assistant coach from 2007-2009. In 2010, Powell was promoted to Head Assistant Coach, and he has remained committed to the program since then. Powell has been involved in 300 total wins since first joining the program, and as assistant coach helped the team during its historic 2014-15 season. That year’s team won 22 games, captured the program’s first Heart Postseason Tournament championship, and made an appearance in the NAIA Men’s Basketball National Tournament for the first time in more than 20 years, advancing to the round of 16.
Powell has also made a positive impact in the college and Marshall, Mo., community. He has been an Instructor of Education for the college since 2010, was a Camp Coach for the Snow Valley Basketball Camp of Missouri for more than a decade, which was recognized as the toughest basketball camp in America. He also helped create and facilitate a youth soccer academy in Marshall, beginning in 2016.
Powell recognizes Chad Lance and Dr. Earl Wellborn as the two people to greatly impact him while at Missouri Valley. Powell credits Lance for helping him recognize his true calling as a coach, and for creating a family atmosphere with unwavering support that makes Missouri Valley feel like home. He also credits Dr. Wellborn for inspiring him to become a teacher.
