Bio
James graduated from Missouri Valley College with a degree in Physical Education and Education Honor Roll. James earned 15 varsity letters in four sports, and played on three M.C.A.U. championship football teams, he was captain of the football team his senior year, and earned M.C.A.U. First Team All-Star football honors all four seasons. Jim was twice named M.C.A.U. Second Team in basketball, and was voted Most Popular Boy, sang with the Cappella Choir four years, was a member of Who’s Who in American College’s and Universities, and played in the Missouri Valley College Orchestra.
Following graduation James earned his Master’s Degree from Northwestern University in 1939; he joined the United States Navy Preflight School and was a Lieutenant Commander in Physical Training Rehabilitation. James taught and coached in public school and his teams won 13 of a possible 16 championships including conference, county, district, and state championships. James earned Coach of the Year Honors in Iowa Interscholastic Athletics.
James went on to become the Associate Director and Chairman in the Department of Athletics and Physical Education at Wake Forest College he held this position from 1946 to 1957. While working at Wake Forest James earned his Ph.D in 1953 from the University of North Carolina. From 1957 to 1963 James held the title of Director of the Division of Athletics in Toledo, Ohio, and followed that as Director of Physical Education and Athletics at the University of New Hampshire from 1963 to 1966. Since 1966 James has bee Dean at the School of Health and Physical Education at Oregon State University.
