Women's Volleyball Suffers Road Loss to Grand View
Des Moines, Iowa, (Oct. 26, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College women's volleyball team traveled to Des Moines, Iowa, for a Saturday afternoon Heart of America Athletic Conference match with Grand View (Iowa). The Vikings fell in three games by scores of 20-25, 19-25, 23-25.
The two teams traded points through much of play in the opening game. Senior Outside Hitter Ksenija Simun (Kotor, Montenegro) and Junior Middle Hitter Kinga Ramonowicz (Krepiec, Poland) each landed a pair of kills through a 5-5 score. Another kill from Simun, followed by an ace by Junior Libero Ana Franco (Cascais, Portugal) and one kill from Senior Right Side Bea Bartolome (Madrid, Spain) kept MVC to within an 11-10 score. Senior Outside Hitter Angelique Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.) added the next kill for Missouri Valley, and the teams were tied once again, at 14-14. Junior Outside Hitter Blanca Arciniega Palma (El Paso, Texas) put down one kill, followed by a block from Simun and Junior Middle Hitter Patrysia Uzoma (Moscow, Russia) to make it 17-17. Grand View pulled away from there, winning six of the next seven points. Uzoma and Bartolome each had one kill late in the game, but GVU won, 25-20.
The second game started with Grand View jumping out to a 7-3 advantage. Missouri Valley worked back, and Ramonowicz and Palma finished off a pair of kills each, and Simun added one kill to put the deficit at 10-8. A stretch of MVC taking five of six points, featuring one kill from Morgan, two kills from Palma, one kill from Uzoma, and the pair of Palma and Uzoma teaming up on a block tied the score at 13-13. Four-straight points were won by Missouri Valley, as Bartolome, Ramonowicz and Simun each added one kill to put the team in front, 17-15. Another kill from Ramonowicz helped make it a 19-17 lead. Grand View followed with a run to end the game, taking the final eight points to pull ahead and take the game, 25-19.
Trailing by two games, Missouri Valley opened the third with building up a lead. Bartolome had one kill, then teamed up with Ramonowicz on a block. Simun landed one kill, and added a solo block, while Junior Setter Ana Santos (Curitiba, Brazil) finished off an ace to make it 5-2. Morgan added another kill as MVC stayed on top, 7-4. Grand View came back to grab a lead at 10-9, but MVC answered with a run. Bartolome and Uzoma teamed up on a block, then Franco landed back-to-back aces, to help with four-straight points to push ahead, 13-10. Grand View responded and won six of the next seven points to sit in front, 16-14. The two teams traded points over the next stretch, which featured one kill from Morgan, Palma and Simun, but MVC trailed, 21-19. Franco landed two more aces late in the game, and a Ramonowicz kill brought Missouri Valley back to trail, 24-23. The next point was won by GVU to end the game, 25-23, and Missouri Valley dropped the match.
Simun totaled eight kills and 11 digs, while Palma had eight kills. Ramonowicz added seven kills. Sophomore Setter Paige Siebert (St. Louis, Mo.) led with 21 assists. Franco led with 14 digs and added five aces. Missouri Valley totaled five blocks and six aces in the match.
Missouri Valley drops to 14-13 overall and 6-8 in the Heart. Grand View improves to 12-13 on the season and 10-4 in the conference.
Up next, the Viking women's volleyball team goes to Parkville, Mo., for a Heart match with Park (Mo.), Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Vikings defeated the Pirates, at home, back on Oct. 4, in five games.
