
No. 13 Women's Soccer Plays Jamestown to a Tie
Marshall, Mo., (Aug. 23, 2023)- The No. 13 Missouri Valley College women's soccer team played its first home contest of the season, hosting Jamestown (N.D.) in a non-conference game. The Vikings fell behind early, but worked back to earn a 1-1 tie.
The game started with an early goal scored by Jamestown. With just over three minutes played, the Jimmies scored to hold a 1-0 advantage. Missouri Valley owned the better of possession over the next stretch of play, and earned three-consecutive corner kicks through the seven-minute mark. Freshman Goalkeeper Marina Barbara Bujalance (Cornella Llobregat, Spain) was called on for her first save four minutes later. The Vikings continued to apply pressure on the Jamestown defense, and eventually worked a chance on-goal. Senior Midfielder Miluska Guevara (Panama City, Panama) sent a cross to the box, and found Sophomore Midfielder Carla Carmona (Barcelona, Spain). Carmona sent a shot past the keeper and into goal to tie the teams at 1-1 with 15 minutes played. The two teams traded possession over the next stretch of play. The next attempt on-goal for MVC came with just over 10 minutes remaining until the break, but the attempt from Sophomore Forward Judit Ferre (Barcelona, Spain) was saved. With less than four minutes left in the half, Missouri Valley earned a penalty kick. Junior Defender Rina Kinami (Tokorozawa, Spain) took the penalty kick, but her attempt hit off the crossbar, and the teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.
The second half featured more possession for the Vikings, as Jamestown was unable to register a shot in the entire half. The first attempt on-goal for MVC came near the 60-minute mark, when Sophomore Forward Ashley Arribas (Lake Forest, Calif.) had a close effort saved. A Jamestown player was sent off with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest, earning a second yellow card, and the team was forced to play with 10 on the field. Just over one minute later, Arribas had a shot hit off the crossbar, and moments following an attempt from Kinami was saved. Sophomore Defender Daijah White (Tucson, Ariz.) had a header off a corner go towards goal, but her chance was blocked by a Jamestown defender in the final eight minutes. Sophomore Midfielder Madi Hudson (Sandbach, England) and Arribas each had one more chance, but both attempts were saved, and the teams finished in a 1-1 tie.
Carmona scored her first goal of the season, while Guevara added the assist. Barbara Bujalance made one save in goal. Missouri Valley finished with a 9-2 advantage in shots, including four on-goal, and held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
Missouri Valley moves to 0-1-1 on the season while Jamestown sits at 0-0-1.
