Richard graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1957 where he was a four-year letterman in both football and golf. Richard was co-captain of the 1956 football team and played in four bowl games, the Marble (1953), the Cigar (1954), the Mineral water (1955), and the Tangerine (1956).
Following graduation Richard held several teaching and coaching positions at Papillion (NE) High School (1957-59), Adrian (MO) High School (1959-60), Lafayette (St. Joseph, MO) High School (1960-61), and Benton (St. Joseph, MO) High School (1961 to present).
Richard and his wife Beverly were members of the Ashland Avenue United Methodist Church in St Joseph.
