Norris graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1939 where he participated in football, basketball, and baseball.
Following graduation Norris began a coaching career at Trenton (MO) High School in 1940. Norris went on to teach and coach at Marshall High School, Excelsior Springs High School, and Danville (IL) High School between 1941 and 1950. In 1950 Norris joined the faculty at William Jewell College and served as head football coach and athletic director until 1967. Norris served as coordinator of special projects for one year before becoming the Director of Athletics and Physical Education at the United States International University in San Diego, California. Norris returned in July of 1975 to William Jewell College as Chairman of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics, and Assistant Director of Development.
