N. Doug McAnelly enjoyed a successful career at Missouri Valley College as a student-athlete with the football program. He transferred into the program as a junior prior to the 1974 season and played on the offensive line. McAnelly helped the team to the 1974 NAIA Division II National championship game. In his two seasons with the program, he won two Heart of America Athletic Conference championships and helped the teams to a combined record of 18-3-1. He was a two-time all-conference selection at the offensive tackle position. Outside of football, McAnelly was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, serving as vice president and pledge master.
McAnelly graduated from Missouri Valley in 1976, and later received his master's degree in 1988. He went into education, spending 35 years teaching and coaching in Iowa. During his teaching career, he was named a Who's Who in America Teaching three times. McAnelly coached football, basketball, baseball, track and softball at both the junior high and high school levels, taking multiple teams and individuals to state championship competitions and winning numerous conference championships. He spent three seasons coaching at Graceland (Iowa) College as defensive coordinator and admissions recruiter.
Since retiring from education, McAnelly has stayed active, continuing to coach ninth grade girls basketball at Indianola (Iowa) High School, and working with youth shotput and discuss throwers. His brother, Bruce McAnelly was inducted into the Missouri Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.
McAnelly credits his football coach, Ken Gibler, as the person who greatly influenced him during his time at Missouri Valley College. He says the lessons he learned have stayed with him throughout his professional career, and says that coming to Missouri Valley and getting his degree was one of the best decisions he ever made.
