Lou graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1974, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. While at Valley Lou was a four-year starter at defensive end and a four-year football letterman. Lou was a V-Club member, V-Club Sergeant of Arms and was named All-Conference and All-District at defensive end. During his senior year, he was co-captain of the football team and was named Mr. Viking. During this time, he organized the first Viking boxing club, and earned the Springfield Golden Gloves Heavyweight Championship.
During his professional career Lou has been a football, baseball, and track coach, and a teacher at various high schools and colleges throughout Missouri and Kansas, including Missouri Valley College.
Lou and his wife, Rene, live in Lenexa, Kansas and have two daughters.
