John was a 1950 graduate of Missouri Valley College. He was a three-year letterman in football playing quarterback and blocking back for the Vikings. John was a three-year V-Club member and an eventual vice-commander of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
During his freshman year the Missouri Valley College football team was undefeated and went on to win the MCAU football championship. The team extended its victory streak to 20 straight wins. John lettered as a sophomore during the 1947 season, a season which was one of the greatest seasons in Missouri Valley College history. The 1947 team went undefeated and participated in two post-season bowl games. During the 1949 season Missouri Valley College won the MCAU for the sixth year, with the leadership of “Big John” in the backfield.
On graduation day John married college recruiter Lynelle Hawkins. John’s professional career included work with the Boy Scouts of America through the Missouri Valley College Humanics program.
