John graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1941 and later returned to his alma mater for one year as an Associate Professor of Chemistry.
John was a four-year letterman in track and field, and was captain of the 1941 team. During his career on the Missouri Valley College track and field team John won all but one meet he competed in over a four year span.
In 1943 John earned an AB degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Purdue University, following that with graduate work in chemistry at the University of Kansas in 1949.
During World War II John served in the United States Navy in the Pacific and China. John served as a Deck Officer, Port Director, and as a Commanding Officer of an LST.
From 1950 to 1981 John worked for the Amoco Oil Company in Sugar Creek, Missouri before retiring to Arkansas to continue his 50 year love of golf.
John and his wife Virginia have two daughters Lynn and Jayne, and four grandchildren.
