Bio

James Guthrey made an impact on the football field and on the wrestling mats during his time at Missouri Valley, as a stand-out student-athlete in both sports.  Guthrey was a three-year letterman for the Viking football team at the center position.  He helped the team to a National runner-up finish in 1974, earning first team all-conference honors for his play.  In wrestling, Guthrey was a two-year letterman, competing in the heavyweight position.  He was a two-time National qualifier at the weight class and was named the team’s Most Improved Wrestler in 1973 when he led the team with five pins that season.

In addition to his success as an athlete, Guthrey was a member of the V-Club and the TKE fraternity.  He worked at Butterfield Youth Center during his time at Missouri Valley.  Guthrey’s life was cut short, as he died in an automobile accident in May of 1975, three months prior to the start of his senior season year at Missouri Valley.

While at Missouri Valley, Guthrey credited his wrestling coach, Warren Dew, and Ken Gibbler as people that impacted him the most.  He is remembered as someone that was always encouraging and mentoring other teammates and students, and was a good friend to all that knew him.
