Herb is a 1956 graduate of Missouri Valley College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Herb came to Missouri Valley College on an athletic scholarship and competed in football and basketball. After completing his degree, Herb enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and achieved the rank of first lieutenant.
Herb began his teaching and coaching career in Higginsville, MO. During his second season as head coach Herb’s team won the league championship. After a year at Central Missouri State university, where he was completing his Master’s Degree, Herb joined Van Horn High School in Kansas City, MO where he was employed for 28 years. Herb was named Coach of the Year for the metropolitan area in 1984, and received the Patterson Award, for a successful 8-2 season. Herb’s career record at Van Horn was 97-72 and retired from coaching in 1985, only to return in 1986 when the newly hired coach became ill and could not complete the season. Herb retired from teaching in 1990.
Herb and his wife, Carol were married 36 years before his death in 1997. They have three children Mike, Jon, and Mary. Herb was inducted into the Missouri Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame posthumously.
