Fred graduated from Missouri Valley with honors in 1953. He was a four-year letterman in football and team captain in 1952. In 1950 he earned an honorable mention at tackle. He was named all conference tackle his Junior and Senior years.
While a student Fred was active in Beta Beta Beta, serving as President; Sigma Zeta Honorary Fraternity, serving as Vice President; Science Club, V-Club, Student Senate, and named to the Dean’s List. He was also named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Fred lists coach Volney Ashford, Pop Ferguson, and Professor Bruce Stewart as the people who influenced him the most while at Valley.
Fred retired as partner of O.H. Matthes Inc., mainline carrier for K.C. Star newspaper. He is an active member of the community as he served nine years on the Raytown school board, is a member of the Raytown Park Board, Rotary Club (past president), Chamber of Commerce, and was awarded the Adult Leadership Award in 1977. He is a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S.M.C. reserve – P.L.C. program.
